NFIRS: National Fire Incident Reporting System

NFIRS Sunsetting January 2026

The National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) has served as the nation’s primary system for collecting fire incident data since it was established in 1975, but unfortunately it can no longer support the needs of the United States fire service.

Starting in 2025 all fire departments will be transferred over to the new National Emergency Response Information System (NERIS) for fire-based, all-hazards incident reporting and data analytics for the fire service. NFIRS will sunset in January 2026 and will no longer be available by anyone. Provided below are key points and dates in the NFIRS sunset and transition to NERIS for fire-based, all-hazards incident reporting and analytics:

2025 is a hybrid reporting year.

  • 2025 incidents can be submitted to either NFIRS or NERIS.
  • Export your fire department incidents to comply with your retention requirements
    • If your department is already storing incident data in a local system consistent with your records retention policy, you should already have the incident data/NFIRS data your department needs.
    • If your department is not already storing incident data in a local RMS or storage system consistent with your records retention policy, you will need to establish a storage location and begin exporting your data from eNFIRS for local storage and retention before the deadline. You should be doing this now, rather than waiting and discovering problems when NFIRS staff is to busy to help you.

2026 incident reporting will only be in NERIS.

  • Starting Jan. 1, 2026, incident data submission will be exclusively in NERIS.
    • No calendar year (CY) 2026 incidents will be submitted into NFIRS.
  • Jan. 31, 2026: end date for edits/modifications for CY25 incident records in NFIRS.
  •  NFIRS will be unavailable for all users starting in February 2026.

NERIS Onboarding for Nevada is in November 2025

    OnboardingInformation | NERIS

We have reached out to all current users in the NFIRS system. If you did not receive anything from us, then we do not have your information. Please provided one or two points of contact for your department to sfm@dps.state.nv.us. Accounts are being pre-set up in NERIS and the provided email addresses will be sent login information in November 2025 from the NERIS team.

Once logged in, users will be able to provide and/or confirm information about the department and manage users.

Reporting can be done via direct entry or through an integration partner (third-party reporting system).

      Integration Partners

      IntegrationPartners | NERIS

NERIS has identified software vendors whose products meet the technical standards necessary to integrate with the system. Integration Partners have confirmed their software products meet specific technical standards for API compatibility.

If departments use an Integration Partner, a link can be created within NERIS to the third party. Reporting incidents in the third-party system will automatically be copied into NERIS without needing to export on a monthly or quarterly basis and email to our office.

The list will be updated as more vendors are awarded the compatibility badge.
